On first listen, a record for the intrusive atmosphere from the next room, but on the second listen a dark work. It's built from minimal Latin and roots loops, acoustic guitar and the voice of Manu Chao, who some may still remember as the lead singer of French-Spanish agitpop band Mano Negra. On his hard drive, Miguel Matamoros, Bob Marley and Subcomandante Marcos meet for a bag of summer weed. But the mood changes when their heads become heavy with the misery of their nations. "Africano clandestino / Marijuana illegal" is the chorus, and into the mix of Mexican ballad and Cuban son, comes the sound of the siren of one of those toys that illegal African immigrants sell on Spanish and French beaches. In general, Chao sprinkles samples like snippets of rebel pamphlets among his riddims: from Gibraltar to Rio, and when it comes to lost love, sometimes from an answering machine.
