Between the release of Heartattack and Vine in 1980 and Swordfishtrombones in 1983, Tom Waits changed labels and transformed himself from a jazz poet and singer into something entirely new. Swordfishtrombones is the beginning of an apparent trilogy in which Waits became a creator of soundscapes (this album was the first Waits produced himself) and which mixes equal parts German cabaret, the patina of the old eighties and the sentimental power of John McCormack ballads. Waits began to use his voice in extraordinary ways here, from the sideshow bark of "Underground" to the coughingly syrupy strain of "Swordfishtrombone," and the instrumentation changed along with it, with new Harry Partch-inspired drums and Salvation Army brass arrangements. Looking back, hints of this sound had already appeared on Heartattack and Vine albums, but nothing prepared fans for this full-blown masterpiece. (tomwaits. com)
