The nineteen-year-old British singer broke through in England with her first single "Chasing Pavements": the number hit the singles chart before the album was released, thanks entirely to digital sales. The long-playing "19" went straight to number one in the album charts. You don't need a crystal ball to predict that 2008 will be the year of Adele! Born in Tottenham and raised in Brixton, this young lady started playing guitar, writing songs and singing at the age of 14. Her influences range from Billie Holiday to Dusty Springfield and Björk. Her first commercial single is bluesy, melancholic and soulful all at once, and the Sunday Times said of it, "A star is born", while Q magazine declared, "The voice of next year". The venerable BBC also predicted, "Adele is British music critics' best hope for 2008". This is according to the "Sound of 2008 Poll", the BBC's traditional survey of around 150 music journalists, critics and radio and TV producers. Previous winners of the poll include Mika (2007) and Corinne Bailey Rae (2006).
