This release marks Aretha's second LP, The Electrifying Aretha Franklin, originally released in 1962 on the Columbia label. All of these great tracks feature fantastic musicians from the New York scene such as Oliver Nelson (saxophone), Jimmy Cleveland and Urbie Green (trombone), Mundell Lowe and Bucky Pizzarelli (guitar), Wynton Kelly and Tommy Flanagan (piano), Jimmy Cobb (drums) and more. The album is the best possible introduction for anyone wanting to explore the first steps of "Lady Soul's" professional musicianship. John Hammond (who also discovered Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen) followed the recipe he once described for Billie Holiday when recording Aretha's early records: standards and blues with a jazzy rhythm section, horns and hit lists. Another classic album by the singer, The Tender, the Moving, the Swinging Aretha Franklin, is added here as a bonus, as are 4 other tracks from the same period.
