He is also a generous mentor who, after forming the collective group The Jazz Messengers with Horace Silver in the early 1950s, encouraged the development of gifted young musicians such as trumpeters Clifford Brown and Donald Byrd, pianist Chick Corea, and even saxophonist Wayne Shorter. Of all the albums this indispensable formation recorded, "Moanin'" is undoubtedly the most important example of the sound that became the foundation of modern jazz. Based on the themes played together by Benny Golson and Lee Morgan, Bobby Timmons' "church" piano, Jymie Merritt's cat-like bass lines, and Art Blakey's drums that sound like a full orchestra and showcase the constant swing of the cymbals, it is more than the sound of a large group that is the true essence of the golden era of jazz.
