It took Columbia Records' lawyers seven months to get Janis Joplin and her band out of an unhappy contractual relationship with Mainstream Records. Only then, in August 1968, could the film Cheap Thrills be released. A famous performance at the Monterey Pop Festival the year before had created a stir and brought attention to Joplin, but apart from a poorly produced LP, no record of hers had been released by then. Expectations were high - and Cheap Thrills lived up to them. That album sold more than a million copies and cemented Joplin's reputation as the first true female rock superstar. Her extraordinary singing talent, her unmistakable bluesy voice, transports you right back to 1968. One thing is for sure: Janis Joplin cannot be imitated or matched for class.
