This album may have saved Bob Dylan's career. In any case, 1970's "New Morning" proved that the Bard was still relevant and his wit was intact. "New Morning" followed directly on the heels of Dylan's greatest disaster, the still unexplained and forever disturbing Self Portrait - a nearly unlistenable album that left many a fan wondering if his idol had gone mad. Well, the qualitative difference at least suggests that the predecessor's failure was calculated. "New Morning" draws on the laid-back country-rock of John Wesley Harding and Nashville Skyline, complete with a distinct rock 'n' roll edge. Dylan goes down new, peculiar paths with some of the songs he's left untouched up to that point. There are jazz experiments in "Sign on the Winter" and "Winterlude," the rambunctious spoken word of "If Dogs Run Free" and the Elvis parable "Went to See the Gypsy." These unconventional songs make "New Morning" the charming and charming album that it is.
