Chet Baker (1929-1988) is well known today as a trumpeter and singer. Chet's trumpet and his voice seem to be extensions of the same musical personality, and once you become familiar with both aspects of Baker, expect to hear both.

However, this album was a revelation in its day, bringing Baker new fame and a new audience that was not as familiar with jazz as it was with pop music. The reasons are obvious: Chet's voice is smooth and beautiful, while his phrasing is always sweeping and surprising. Although the album Chet Baker Sings is now considered a classic and is still one of jazz's bestsellers, its early critical reception was not very favorable, with many renowned jazz writers denouncing Chet's singing as harsh, unprofessional, and not manly enough. Despite the critics' opinions, the album never stopped selling, and such was its popularity that after its initial release in 1954 as a ten-inch LP (Pacific Jazz LP11), which contained only eight tracks, it reappeared in 1956 as a twelve-inch LP (World Pacific PJ-1222).

Both of these original LPs were recorded in mono, but Chet Baker Sings did not lose popularity in 1962, when the new craze for stereo recordings began. Pacific Jazz therefore decided to reissue the LP in stereo. To achieve this, they recorded Joe Pass' additional guitar accompaniment and mixed it with the original mono tapes. The result, which you can listen to here, was a new album that did not respect the track order of its mono predecessors. While the ten-inch version contained eight tracks and the twelve-inch version contained fourteen, the new stereo edition contained twelve tunes (three tracks were removed from the twelve-inch album and a version of "Someone to Watch Over Me" from another recording was added).

Chet Baker is one of the founders of cool jazz. He was also known as the James Dean of jazz. Unfortunately, this trumpeter also drew attention to himself repeatedly with drug excesses and a stint in prison. Yet, Chet Baker is still the "Prince of Cool" today because of his genius, quirky personality and timeless sound.

"Chet Baker Sings" is his first vocal album, released on Pacific Jazz Records. The album was originally released in 1954 in single format as a 10" and double 7". In 1956 it was released as a 12" with six additional tracks recorded at the Forum Theatre in July 1956.

In 2001, the album was honored with a Grammy Hall of Fame award. Baker returned to excerpts from this album repeatedly throughout his career. The song "My Funny Valentine" was played regularly at his concerts and is considered by some to be his signature tune.
