Even after his time with Miles Davis and his increasingly inventive solo albums, nothing could have prepared the listener for the breathtaking beauty of this album. Chick leads a brand new band behind electric keys, playing four of his songs, all of which have become classics. Stanley Clarke - one of Chick's most stalwart musical partners - plays bass here for the first time, along with the excellent Joe Farrell on saxophone and flute, Airt on drums and the amazing singer Flora Purim. The sound is distinctly electric, with Brazilian percussion and a lingering warmth never before achieved on a plug-in jazz album. Return to Forever is an album for the ages.
