Released in two editions: a 2-CD and a 4-LP set, the album was well received by music critics. On Metacritic, which assigns a standardized rating out of 100 to mainstream critics' reviews, the album received an average score of 85 out of 15 reviews, indicating "universal acclaim": "The album is great: "There's something for everyone on Legacy, from the first singles to the latest album, Blackstar. It's an immensely satisfying listen that not only provides a comprehensive overview of Bowie's career, but also highlights just how innovative and influential he was during his five decades in the spotlight." The Guardian's Alexis Petridis awarded the album four stars out of five, saying, "Bowie's career is very varied: the compilation is expertly put together, with each era of Bowie's career given its due attention.
