Deep Purple - the name alone will set many people's hearts racing, because these rockers shaped many a young man in the wild seventies. Tommy Bolin, David Coverdale, Glenn Hughes, Jon Lord and Ian Paice played in this line-up until 1976, before their paths parted for a time and they reunited with Ian Gillan as lead singer in 1984. At that time, Bolin, Coverdale, Hughes, Lord and Paice played a concert at Japan's Budokan Hall on 15 December 1975 - one of the last concerts of this legendary line-up. By 1976, this line-up consisted of Tommy Bolin, David Coverdale, Glenn Hughes, Jon Lord and Ian Paice before the band members' paths diverged for a time, reuniting in 1984 with Ian Gillan as lead singer. It was during this time that Bolin, Coverdale, Hughes, Lord and Paice played a concert at Japan's Budokan Hall on 15 December 1975 - one of the last concerts of this legendary line-up. Tony Klinger, the director of the show, shot the entire concert from Tokyo on 16mm film and edited the footage, which was originally intended to be used for promotion and as an introduction to new member Tommy Bolin. Klinger cut the concert down to 30 minutes under the title "Deep Purple Rises Over Japan". The rest of the footage is still missing. All that remains is an unreleased snippet containing the classic tracks "Burn", "Love Child", "Smoke On The Water", "You Keep On Moving" and "Highway Star" as an encore. The video material was almost forgotten until it was released by German TV as part of a concert series, and now for the first time it is being released exclusively on DVD and Blu-ray. Great hits and a Japanese audience that was absolutely enthusiastic and euphoric, reminiscent of Beatlemania, created a unique atmosphere in 1975 and proved once again that Deep Purple are living legends. A particular highlight of "Phoenix Rising", however, is a one-and-a-half-hour documentary that contains previously unseen footage. You'll see behind-the-scenes footage, rare concert moments from Hawaii, New Zealand and Australia, as well as the infamous concert in Jakarta, Indonesia, where a tragic accident killed one of the crew. The documentary is supplemented by old footage of interviews with Bolin, Coverdale and Paice, which generally reflect the wild life of the rockers. Also mentioned is the early tragic death of guitarist Tommy Bolin and Hughes and Bolin's serious drug problems. This unique documentary shows how the excessive drug use and the differing musical ideas of each band member led to the breakup of Deep Purple in 1976.
