A Broken Frame is the second studio album by English electronic music group Depeche Mode , released on 27 September 1982 by Mute Records. The album was recorded at Blackwing Studios in London, England and Hansa Tonstudios in West Berlin, Germany. The album was produced by Daniel Miller, Depeche Mode , and Gareth Jones. A Broken Frame was the first Depeche Mode album to feature Alan Wilder as a permanent member. The album's title refers to the fact that singer Dave Gahan was left by his then-wife Jennifer, taking their son with her. The album cover features a photograph of Gahan with a broken mirror, taken by Brian Griffin. The album A Broken Frame was not as successful as its predecessor Speak & Spell, but still achieved gold status in the UK. Two singles were released from the album, "See You" and "The Meaning of Love". A Broken Frame has been re-released several times. The first reissue was in 1984 and the second in 1992. A two-disc special edition was released in 2001, which included a disc of remixes and a disc of B-sides.
