Anyone who talks like that today must have been quick on his feet in the '70s and '80s, and in his younger years he sensed down to his toes that there was plenty of tingling substance in the commercial fusion music of his Saturday night swingers. More. Earth, Wind & Fire even attributed existential significance to the band's highly layered blend of Latin, gospel, soul, funk and a sharp horn section: this album was supposed to point the way to whether the band could make it big or fall into the nameless monotony of countless rhythm & blues bands. The basic recipe of smooth Latin beats, pithy bass grooves and lush funk improvisations, spiced with exotic sonic ingredients, was right on. The airy falsetto and relaxed harmony vocals created a condensed big band sound that Rolling Stone trade magazine described as innovative yet popular, precise yet sensual, calculated yet engaging. After nearly two decades and more than three million copies sold in the U.S. alone, the editors made their decision and voted the album into their list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. It was about time, because now ravers and rappers also have the opportunity to experience Papa's dance beat.
