The paths of Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald certainly crossed many times in the 1930s, 1940s and early 1950s. However, there is no record of the two legendary musicians working together until 1957, when they participated in a series of big band sessions for Norman Granz. Although Ellington admired Ella, he had a busy concert schedule at the time and had little spare time to compose new music or to create specific arrangements for those albums that would fit into the "songwriting" formula that had worked so well for Ella. Ella had to use standard band arrangements. Ella Fitzgerald was by any standards a remarkable singer. When she signed with the newly formed Verve Records in 1956, she had already had many successes, but it was Norman Granz, her personal manager and founder of Verve, who suggested that her songs, written by major contemporary composers, be released on themed albums. The implementation of this brilliant idea has taken her career to unprecedented heights. The selection of her compositions ranged mostly from standards to rarities. By selecting eight titles for each album, they wanted to appeal to listeners who had not yet been captivated by the 1935 vinyl recordings.
