Hinter dem Quintett Flying Colors stand Anfangs eine einfache Idee: virtuose Musiker und ein Popsänger machen neumodische Musik auf altmodische Weise. Daraus entwickelte sich die Band Flying Colors, bestehend aus Mike Portnoy (Schlagzeug, Gesang), Dave LaRue (Bass), Neal Morse (Keyboards, Gesang), Casey McPherson (Gesang, Gitarre) und Steve Morse (Gitarre). Gemeinsam schaffen sie eine einzigartige Mixtur aus klassischer Kunstfertigkeit und zeitgenössischer Musik. Together, they create a unique fusion of historic craft, contemporary music and riveting live performances. In 2008, Executive Producer Bill Evans began to bring this idea to life. He needed exactly the right musicians to make it happen. In addition to being exceptional players and writers, they would have to be a natural creative fit and complement each other's skills. They would have a proven chemistry with each other from previous collaborations, but the new band would be different from anything they had done before. The world didn't need another supergroup. As with the classic albums, there would be a strong production team that would be a creative extension of the band: a visionary producer, an imaginative engineer, and a compelling visual artist. Although these were experienced artists with impressive backgrounds and catalogues, this would be new territory for most of them.
