The horrifying story of the first happily in love, then unhappy, deranged Lucia, who commits suicide and takes her lover with her to the next world, is Donizetti's most famous tragic opera seria. In popularity, it is even close to his hit, The Love Potion. The role of the title heroine is a great opportunity for the coloratura prima donna, who must easily navigate the incredible technical intricacies of her part. Anna Netrebko is just that in the successful production at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Her wonderful partner is the Polish tenor Piotr Beczala as her lover. The production became one of the most successful in the history of the MET after 2000.
