On both sides of the Atlantic, Heavy Horses reached the top twenty. Commercial success corresponded with high critical praise for the melodies, instrumentation, and Anderson's characteristic flute playing. More recently, in particular, many critics have praised the album as "bold and experimental", both intelligent and exciting, calling it "a testament to the men who made it".
