Almost 40 years ago, on August 31, 1970, Leonard Cohen was awakened from his sleep in his trailer at 2 p.m. and invited on stage. It was his first appearance at the third annual Isle Of Wright Music Festival. The 600,000 visitors were boisterous and spirits were buoyed after the festival turned into a political happening: fences were trampled and things were set on fire. What's more, Jimi Hendrix's most explosive performance, which took place less than three weeks before his death, ended minutes early and the audience celebrated thunderously. Leonard Cohen took his place on stage and began to play. The crowd quieted down and watched the concert spellbound. Joan Baez, Kris Kristofferson, Judy Collins and other headliners watched in awe from the edge of the stage as the Canadian folk singer, songwriter, poet and author tamed the crowd. All of the included songs are unreleased (except for portions of "Suzanne").
