The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart, selling 241,000 copies in its first week. The album A Thousand Suns received mixed reviews from music critics. Some praised the album for its ambition and experimental sound, while others criticized it for being too experimental and lacking the band's signature sound. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album, but lost to Muse's The Resistance. Despite mixed reviews, A Thousand Suns was commercially successful.
