Again on this recording, the charismatic Giovanni Antonini and the multi-award-winning Basel Chamber Orchestra, playing both in historic performance practice and with modern instruments, demonstrate how spectacularly new Beethoven can sound. This thrilling interpretation, brimming with musical energy, impresses with breathtaking clarity and precision. The orchestra plays an unusually lean Beethoven that reveals unprepossessing contrasts. Antonini achieves a unique brevity of sound. The symphony concludes with the effective and haunting final movement of Friedrich Schiller's 1785 "Ode to Joy", which is superbly sung on this recording by the Wroclaw Philharmonic Choir, Swiss soprano Regula Mühlemann, mezzo-soprano Marie-Claude Chappuis, tenor Maximilian Schmitt and baritone Thomas E. Bauer.
