Powerwolf - a name that will make any fan of traditional melodic heavy metal moisten their eyes with joy, and which denotes a successful quintet that, after fifteen years of steep ascent, basically needs no further introduction. Last year, the anniversary was celebrated with a best-of that brought together the best of their six studio albums to date under one roof - including LP hits from their early work and more recent hits from their gold-award winning 'Blessed & Possessed' and 'The Sacrament Of Sin' albums, such as the platinum-selling 'Demons Are A Girl's Best Friend'. Now, a mere 12 months later, the most successful pack of the current German metal fauna is ready with fangs bared for another bloody foray. In the form of the programmatically titled "Call Of The Wild", which was once again recorded in collaboration with the venerable production duo Jens Bogren and Joost van den Broek at Fascination Street Studios in Sweden, a new chapter in the band's history has opened, serving up favourite classic tradmarks to veteran and newly recruited Powerwolf fans alike, surprising and delighting them with a stylistic evolution of unprecedented scope at every stage of this ferocious eleven-track ride! 'Faster Than The Flame' - an opening blast that lights a fire in purest Powerwolf style as a fiery distillation of such traditionally full album openers as 'Amen & Attack' and 'Fire & Forgive' - bears the distinctive signature of the creative minds around main songwriter Matthew Greywolf from the first chords, and impressively proves that the five-piece have undoubtedly managed to forge their own unmistakable sound over the last decade and a half. From this bombastic foundation, the Wolves then venture onto the stage with tracks like the outrageously catchy "Dancing With The Dead" (a future cult number on any proper headbanging party's playlist!), the beautifully heretical "Glaubenskraft" or Attila Dorn's epic-emotional star hour "Alive Or Undead" - a power ballad of the first order that definitively cements the frontman's reputation as an utterly exceptional bard - entering new musical territory every now and then to conquer it almost in one breath and turn it into one big firework of fresh influences. Lyrically, Call Of The Wild (aside from the usual tongue-in-cheek heresy à la "Undress To Confess") is a feast of mythical characters, all of whom would hold good cards in a battle for the title of the band's official mascot: While "Beast Of Gévaudan" tells the tale of a legendary predator that spread fear and terror in mid-18th century southern France, the foot-stomping "Varcolac" pays homage to the eponymous wolf demon of Romanian folklore, and the fittingly sound-backed "Blood For Blood (Faoladh)" conjures up images of an Irish relative of the moon-worshipper known as "the werewolf". In the final spurt, "Reverent Of Rats" gives a pompous exclamation point to a work that can rightly be described as the most versatile in the band's history to date and which - beyond all promotional platitudes - is a hot candidate for the top spot among this year's metal releases!
