"I'm a man of the world and they say I'm strong / But my heart is heavy and my hope is gone," sings Freddie Mercury in the song Mother Love in September 1991, just two months before his tragic death. Although the remaining members of the band know of Mercury's wish to release another album, it takes four years before they finally commit to releasing Made In Heaven, the last Queen album with the original lineup, on November 6, 1995. The result is a literally heavenly record that still breathes the bittersweet atmosphere of its time.When Innuendo was released in February 1991, Freddie Mercury was already in the grip of AIDS. Yet this extraordinary musician would not miss the opportunity to come to Montreux, to his own Queen Mountain Studios, to record even more songs. Guitarist Brian May recalls, "We kind of lived in the studio for a while, and as soon as he called us to say he could come in for a few hours, we wanted to take advantage of it." In an effort to accumulate as much material as possible, the band deviates from their usual way of working for the first time: instead of creating complete instrumental versions before recording vocals, Freddie records rough versions of the planned songs. May sings, "Write me something. Give me the words. I'll sing." And so, despite the emotional strain, the quartet pulls together to fulfill the wishes of their friend and comrade-in-arms.While Freddie is still alive, titles like A Winter's Tale and You Don't Fool Me are produced; on Mother Love, Brian May must take over singing the last verse because the frontman no longer has the strength. His death on 24 November 1991 hits the band hard. Roger Taylor admits: "I never got over it. None of us did. I guess we all thought we'd get over it quickly, but we underestimated the force with which his death hit us. To this day, it's hard for me to talk about it." Review ,,The swan song after Mercury's death, Made In Heaven, turned out to be depressing not only because of the tragic backdrop. And yet songs like "Mother Love" and "You Don't Fool Me" showed what Queen might still have had in their barrels had they been given the chance to continue with Freddie."
