The Status Quo's first hit "Pictures of Matchstick Men" was released in 1968, followed shortly thereafter by their debut album "Picturesque Matchstickable Messages from the Status Quo". The single reached number 7 in the UK and remained the group's only major hit in the US, where it reached number 12. The album features several cover versions, including "Green Tambourine" by The Lemon Pipers and "Spicks and Specks" by The Bee Gees. South London natives Alan Lancaster (bass) and Francis Rossi (guitar) are part of the original line-up and are considered the founding fathers of Status Quo. Originally called The Spectres, they later changed their name to Traffic or Traffic Jam and decided to form Status Quo in 1967. In the following years, they were joined by John Coghlan (drums), Roy Lynes (keyboards) and Rick Parfitt (guitar).
