No other band in the British punk movement has caused such a stir as The Clash. The list of pioneering feats by the quartet, with charismatic frontmen Joe Strummer and Mick Jones, is as long as it is legendary: they were the first British punk band to land a record deal with a "major label". They were the first band on the scene to hit the US charts, and the first to abandon the traditional punk style and incorporate reggae, dub, soul, rhythm & blues, funk, hip hop and rock'n'roll into their sound. "The Clash Hits Back" features 32 of the band's best-known songs. The album, which documents the setlist of the legendary 1982 "Brixton Fairdeal" show, features the best studio recordings from the "Sound System" box set and eight other notable songs. Among the 32 tracks on this set are classics such as "London Calling", "The Guns Of Brixton", "Rock The Casbah", "Should I Stay Or Should I Go?" and "White Riot". In addition, the album booklet contains a handwritten setlist by Joe Strummer, who usually taped the back of his Telecaster before each gig. "Every show was different. Joe spent a lot of time putting together the flow of the songs. The dynamics, the emotional impact and the key the songs were in were important to him. These recordings are based on Joe's setlist from 'Brixton Fairdeal' on 10 July 1982 as part of 'The Casbah Club UK Tour' (quoted by Mick, Pail & Topper).
