Grateful Dead cover for a good cause In 2016, a new edition of the Red Hot compilation "Day Of The Dead" will be released for the twenty-fifth time. The sampler was first released in 1990 by the New York-based Red Hot organization, which wanted to use pop culture to bring awareness to HIV/AIDS. To this end, various well-known musicians from pop, indie, rock and alternative music take songs from a particular genre or artist or famous band and reinterpret them. In the case of "Day Of The Dead (Red Hot Compilation)", they took the American rock legends Grateful Dead as their model. This year's sampler features The War on Drugs, Bruce Hornsby, Kurt Vile and the Violators, Courtney Barnett, Mumford & Sons, Lucius and Wilco. Also on the bill are The Tallest Man on Earth, Lucinda Williams, Local Natives, The Flaming Lips, Sam Amidon and many more. Some of the bands are also represented twice on "Day Of The Dead (Red Hot Compilation)". A total of 59 tracks made the cut and are now collected on five CDs or ten LPs. As with Red Hot's 2009 compilation "Dark Was The Night", production was handled by twins Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National. John Carlin, founder of the Red Hot organization, backed them. Good music for a good cause would be an understatement. "Day Of The Dead (Red Hot Compilation)" is a breezy, 59-song tribute by some of today's best indie rockers to a true rock legend.
