People generally talk about the "Ed Banger Sound" as if it were a genre of its own. A unique, essentially music-historical situation where a small Parisian label has practically created its own musical genre. Music magazines review similar releases saying: "Sounds like Ed Banger." Pedro Winter aka Busy P, manager of Daft Punk and Justice, Man of the Year in France (Le Monde cover story), founded the Ed Banger Records label in 2003. Since then, things have gone up steeply. The small Parisian label is keeping the music world on its toes. Some of Busy P's descendants (Justice, Uffie) are now world famous, but others are second to none. Busy P, Mr Oizo, Sebastian, DJ Mehdi, Feadz, Mr Flash and the rest of the Ed Banger crew are in high demand and booked for months in advance at the hottest clubs around the world. The fusion of rock, hip hop, electro and techno or house has been around for a long time, but either classic band arrangements were emulated or guitar riffs were simply laid over the beat. As effective as the sound is on the dancefloor, it is also complex and referential. The songs always sound like the CD just skipped, stopped, or was otherwise mishandled. They are made up of tiny snippets of sound, some of which seem to have been assembled at random. In reality, however, there is a high art behind their construction, not least because, for all the stumbling and stuttering, Ed Banger's songs never sound complex or abstract. This is pure dance music. And it has to work the first time, because there are no second chances on the dance floor." (DIE ZEIT)
