Product Information Memphis is well known as the birthplace of the blues, the wellspring of Southern soul and the birthplace of rock 'n' roll. Over the past decade, my colleagues and I have searched various Memphis vaults, but until now we've focused mostly on soul and R&B. Lest we forget, the city boasted a healthy rock scene even in the 1960s and '70s, but few retrospectives document Memphis music in the psychedelic era, when, as a major recording center, it was a hub not only for local freaks but also for those from neighboring Arkansas, Mississippi and beyond. Big Beat's "Feeling High - The Psychedelic Sound Of Memphis" sheds some welcome light on this long-neglected area, focusing on the years 1967-1969 and especially the work of two famous Memphis mavericks. Jim Dickinson's decades-long career as an iconoclastic musical polymath needs little introduction. But thanks to his rarely discussed tenure as producer-engineer at Ardent studios in the late '60s, Dickinson was responsible for many of the wildest and craziest sessions ever held in Memphis. Some snippets slipped onto obscure singles on the Stax label and elsewhere at the time, like Honey Jug's absurd version of "For Your Love." "Whenever someone came to Ardent, it was obvious who was going to do crazy things," Dickinson told me a few years ago. Among the bands he produced there were the pajama-wearing Wallabys from Jackson, Mississippi, who resembled the Kinks, or the psychedelic rednecks Knowbody Else, who later became known as Black Oak Arkansas. James Parks, on the other hand, was a young punk with wet ears who took over the helm at his uncle Stan Kesler's Sounds Of Memphis studio in 1968 and brought in his geeky friends from counterculture hot spots like Bitter Lemon. Parks' production work included Changin' Tymes, Mother Roses and Triple X, which featured future country star Gus Hardin, as well as crazy studio-only experiments like 'Rubber Rapper' and 'Shoo Shoo Fly'. There's a sense of chaos about most of what Parks produced, which explains why he failed to include much of it at the time - but in retrospect it's a remarkable reservoir of work. Dickinson and Parks represent the fringe of the Memphis music scene of those years. Although the vast majority of the tracks on "Feeling High" hadn't been released before, their inspired madness and shared willingness to push the boundaries of possibility make the recorded evidence truly exceptional. The tracklist features contributions from local notables such as Poor Little Rich Kids, 1st Century and Goatdancers, the sound quality is superb and the detailed sleeve notes spill the beans on this fascinating tributary of the city's musical heritage.
