"Mutazione" is a collection of "reactionary" rarities of underground electronica and new wave recordings from Italy, made during this turbulent period of the early 80s. This release, compiled and curated by Alessio Natalizia of the Walls label (Kompakt), marks the beginning of Strut's collaboration with Walls' Ecstatic label. Styles range from new wave and post-punk to raw electronic tracks and claustrophobic vocals. The stories behind the tracks: the quiet tune "Niccolai" by Laxative Soul is a sample of the Red Brigades' challenge to fellow bandmate Aldo Moro to find the politician's body. Doris Norton's "Norton Apple Software" was selected from an instrumental album sponsored by Apple in 1984. The bands, which were formed in squats in the Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna region, are a hotbed of activism: "We were against the political system and that was it, the right and the left were the same for us," explains Fabrizio Lucarini of the band Plath. Influenced by national paranoia and fear, the bands created a unique sound that was rooted in punk but also included genres such as industrial, new wave, experimental and electronic. Many of these bands were released on limited edition cassettes. Fanzines were produced, both by bands and from the political scene. This gave rise to new artists such as "Suicide Dada" from Turin. They come from the background of the collective around the Milan fanzine VM. The Trax collective, with its "module system" made up of creative and underground musicians, published its own fanzine. There are plenty of stories behind many of the tracks: the chilling "Niccolai" in Laxative Souls features a phone call from the infamous terrorist group Brigate Ross to a colleague, Aldo Moro, explaining where he might find the politician's body. "Edges" by Kirlian Camera is an early single from one of the few underground Italian new wave acts to land a major label deal, and "Norton Apple Software" by Doris Norton is a selection from an all-electronic instrumental album sponsored by...
