Product Information This new series explores the convergence of Southern soul and funk. Our first installment focuses on the sound of Atlanta labels Hotlanta and Aware and their sister venture from Birmingham, Alabama - Clintone. A search through the tape vaults revealed a number of previously unreleased numbers, which are compiled here along with some obscure releases and a few classics. From the latter category we have 'Only A Fool' by Loleatta Holloway and 'I Don't Know What It Is, But It Sure Is Funky' by Ripple - both guaranteed dance monsters. Ripple also bring us the previously unreleased 'Unknown Instrumental #2' - a delicious serving of funk. From the pile of unreleased tracks, David Camon offers us 'Keep On Doin' Your Funky Thing' and Johnny Jacobs 'Ain't It Funky (Doin' Your Own Thing)', two of the best unknown funk cuts to be discovered in recent years. The Family Plann's two tracks show a blend of disco-fied funk that points the way to the latter part of the decade. The same goes for local - but little recorded - Atlanta heroes Maggabrain, whose 'Down At The Disco' makes its debut here. Throughout the compilation, we're reminded of the quality of the music produced in studios in Atlanta and Birmingham, and the detailed sleeve notes explain how funding from porn mogul Michael Thevis ensured the quality of the musicians, studios and composers involved.
