Siggi Loch, music manager, producer and head of the independent jazz label ACT Music + Vision, celebrates his 75th birthday on 6 August. Once the youngest record company boss in the pop business (26 years old) and president of the major label "WEA Europe" (now Warner), in 1992, at the height of his career, he decided to take a radical step: by founding ACT, he fulfilled his lifelong dream of owning his own jazz label. Today he describes the next 23 years at ACT as the most important of his professional life. A life "In The Spirit Of Jazz", which is now reflected in a 5 CD box set with Siggi Loch's personal "Best Of" recordings as a music producer. Starting with Klaus Doldinger's "Jazz Made In Germany" through recordings from Loch's blues and beat time to European jazz greats like Nils Landgren, Esbjörn Svensson, Joachim Kühn or Heinz Sauer and "World Music Jazz" by Michael Wollny, Iir Rantala, Marius Neset, Nguyên Lê, Vincent Peirani and many more. These recordings, as well as almost half of all ACT recordings, were co-produced by Siggi Loch himself. For the other half he has relied on as much diversity as possible through other producers. The common denominator of all past and future productions is the discovery and promotion of new jazz talent from Europe and especially Germany. The spirit of jazz has been with Siggi Loch all his life. That is why the five-part CD edition in which he now looks back is called "Living in the Spirit of Jazz - Siggi Loch 75". A musical autobiography that speaks for itself, although each individual track is linked to so many experiences and memories that they could easily fill a book. Each CD is dedicated to one stage of Siggi Loch's musical life. The arc stretches from Siggi Loch's early musical spark with Sidney Bechet, to early jazz productions with Klaus Doldinger, Klaus Weis, Volker Kriegel and Jean Luc Ponty, to blues and beat recordings with Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker and the "Rattles" and "Spencer Davis Group", to a survey of 23 years of ACT with artists such as Nils Landgren, e. s. t., Michael Wollny, Joachim Kühn, Nguyên Lê and young German jazz musicians and the Jazz at the Berlin Philharmonic series. Siggi Loch My passion for jazz was awakened at the age of 15 by Sidney Bechet. If I hadn't realised at the age of 19 that I didn't have the talent to be a good jazz musician, I wouldn't have had the desire to be professionally associated with this music, and I wouldn't have dreamed of one day starting my own jazz label. Without that desire, I wouldn't have become an EMI Electrola representative in my 20s. Without my deep knowledge of jazz, I would not have become a manager and producer at Philips at 22. However, I owe my career in the recording industry not to jazz, but to my nose for new talent and developments in pop music, which I also picked up early on. It started in 1964 with the production of the Star Club in Hamburg and continued with Liberty, where I discovered Katja Ebstein and also Can and Amon Düül II. From 1971 onwards, as head of the WEA (Warner), I was then only a corporate manager, and occasional discoveries of my own were Jürgen Drews (Ein Bett im Kornfeld), George Baker (Paloma Blanca), Marius Müller-Westernhagen, Heinz Rudolf Kunze and Ideal. With Passport, Al Jarreau, Helen Schneider, Joachim Kuhn and Philip Catherine, jazz was also always present, but was rather marginal in the golden days of rock'n'roll. People preferred to be adorned with Mick Jagger, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles, Rod Stewart, AC/DC or Prince. After thirty years in the music business, most recently as President of WEA Europe, and after the resignation of my boss and mentor Nesuhi Ertegün, I saw that it was time to finally fulfill my childhood dream. I was economically independent, gained enough experience and in 1992 I founded the jazz label ACT. My 75th birthday is also a good opportunity to reflect on the different stages of my more than 50 years as a producer. To mark the occasion, I've created this very personal "Best of" collection, coupled with thanks to the many great artists I've had the privilege of working with.
