Although it is generally accepted that Judas Priest - along with Iron Maiden and Motörhead - are the main representatives of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM), which began in the late 1970s and reached its peak in the early 1980s, The Priest actually formed a link between the golden age of British hard rock (led by Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin) of the early 1970s and the aforementioned NWOBHM. Judas Priest released their first album in 1974, in the middle of the hard rock era, but it wasn't until 1980, when they released their sixth album British Steel, that they gained mainstream attention, and since then their sound has changed dramatically from their early albums. Since then, Judas Priest have become key figures in the genre, both musically (many of their songs are among the quintessential heavy metal classics) and for their leather-and-studs image, which has been adopted by thousands of bands. In The Many Faces Of Judas Priest, we take you into the inner world of the band to enjoy the various side projects of the band members. In addition, we'll delve into the work of some of their musical producers and explore their fantastic catalogue of songs along the way. At the beginning of this journey is Al Atkins, who was none other than the original lead singer of Judas Priest and founded the band in 1969 in Birmingham, England. Due to financial disputes and problems with the band's manager, Al Atkins left and was replaced by Rob Halford. The album Many Faces featured two solo tracks by Atkins, with Ian Hill on bass and the band's guitarist K. K. Downing as co-writer. The following tracks are by Violent Storm, Mick Cervin's fantastic band. The two songs you will find here were produced by K. K. Downing, who also plays guitar on them. The legendary Rodger Bain produced Priest Rock Roll's debut album from 1974. He also produced Black Sabbath's first three albums. The Many Faces album features his work for Hannibal, a great Birmingham band that has been unjustly forgotten. Drummer Alan Moore, who left the band prematurely to play with Sundance before returning in 1976 to record the second Priest album Sad Wings of Destiny, is represented here by two Sundance tracks. Judas Priest's third album Sin After Sin was produced by none other than legendary Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover. By this time, Glover had become a highly sought-after producer. The Many Faces album shows him producing for Elf (Ronnie James Dio's band before Rainbow) and The Spencer Davis Group. Dave Holland was the drummer for the iconic British underground band Trapeze, which included Glenn Hughes (later a member of Deep Purple). Dave joined Judas Priest in 1980 during the recording of British Steel and remained a member of the band for over a decade. He contributed to Hughes' solo debut on The Many Faces and served as producer for the Spanish band Tigres. CD 2 of The Many Faces then delivers a tribute to Judas Priest's songs, true anthems of the genre that highlight their remarkable songwriting talent. The songs are performed by bands from various sub-genres of metal and show the far-reaching and profound influence and respect that Judas Priest have earned. CD 3 concludes this box set with a selection of bands typical of the British metal scene, from Maineeaxe's Speed to Holosades Link to Thrash Metal. Also featured are underground new wave British heavy metal bands such as Gaskin and Ace Lane, and at the very end are Heritage (fronted by Paul Johnson, bassist for Saxon) and 21 Guns, led by former Thin Lizzy guitarist Scott Gorham.
