This unusual collection contains an extensive anthology of piano etudes - short pieces originally intended for didactic purposes. It deals with a selected technical theme with the aim of improving the pianist's technique. Over the centuries, the piano etude has evolved from a simple technical exercise into an elaborate tone poem in which the technical theme is intended to express deep musical meaning and the full range of human emotion. The starting point for this journey through the world of piano etudes are the etudes of Carl Czerny (a pupil of Beethoven), which have a cult status, so to speak. It then leads through a breathtaking landscape of etudes by famous composers (Chopin, Schumann, Brahms, Liszt, Rachmaninov and lesser-known composers). Many of these composers were themselves piano virtuosos and composed etudes to perfect their own technique, such as Alkan, Henselt, Hummel, Moscheles, Moszkowski, Tausig and Lyapunov. Other fascinating etudes are by 20th century composers such as Debussy, Ligeti, Kapustin, Messiaen, Bartók and Glass. Zlata Khokhieva, Vincenzo Maltempo, Wolfram Schmitt-Leonardy, Mark Viner, Michael Ponti, Emanuele Delucchi, Dmitri Alexeev and many others are the interpreters of the works. An amazing collection full of impressive virtuosity, pianistic brilliance, but also human warmth, nurturing and melancholy. The booklet includes an excellent essay by Ateş Orga, an expert in the field.
