The Six Cello Suites BWV 1007-1012 are suites for unaccompanied cello by Johann Sebastian Bach. They are among the most frequently performed and best known solo cello pieces. Because of their high technical difficulty, their etude-like character and the difficulty of interpretation caused by unannotated copies of the works, cello suites have been performed more frequently in public only since the beginning of the 20th century. Since then, however, they have been frequently performed by many renowned cellists and are considered one of Bach's greatest musical achievements. Yo-Yo Ma's performance of these unaccompanied cello suites at "The Proms" concert in front of over 5,000 people earned fantastic reviews. "We were undoubtedly in the presence of a great musician and a man whose concert can be ranked among the best of his life."- BBC Music Magazine. "This spectacular interpretation by the cellist at Prom 68 would have left composers in awe and speechless."-The Guardian. In 1985, Yo-Yo Ma won a Grammy Award in the "Best Solo Instrumental Performance" category for his performance of the Six Cello Suites.
