Ulterior

Ulterior

Ulterior were a London based English post-punk band formed in 2006 and remained active until 2014. Following an explosive fall-out with an initial label, in 2007 they signed to independent record label Disc Error Recordings on a 3x vinyl 12" deal and signed a publishing deal with Bucks Music. All Ulterior's releases with Disc Error were produced by Zlaya Hadzic (Zlaya Loud). A Bosnian born music producer, Zlaya had previously recorded and mixed Sonic Youth and Tortoise. The classic four piece band line-up, from February 2009 onwards, comprised members Simmons, Honey, Mickey and MCG. Former professional footballer Paul McGregor (Honey - lead vocal), his brother Benn (MCG - electronics, synthesisers, back-up vocal), and guitarist Paul Simmons (Simmons) began Ulterior as a three piece band in late 2006. In 2007, Karl Januskevicius (Motorcycle Boy) joined full time on synthesizer. Following notable performances in London, a debut single "Weapons" & UK tours with the likes of A.R.E. Weapons, Ulterior were asked to support The Horrors at the Shockwaves NME Awards 2008 at The London Astoria. That year the band released 2nd EP "15" and was mentioned by The Quietus as "consistently playing some of the most intense gigs in the past couple of years". That year Ulterior featured in printed press such as NME, The Stool Pigeon, Vice Magazine and Artrocker. "Kempers Heads" was a compilation of early Disc Error EPs and previously unreleased recordings licensed to North America (Killer Pimp label) and the Far East (Knew Noise Recordings) in early 2009. 2008 saw Januskevicius move onto bass guitar. In February 2009 Januskevicius quit the band citing health and personal problems on the eve of their European tour with The Sisters Of Mercy. Januskevicius was replaced by Michael Ellis (Mickey) who learned the set on the 20 hour journey to the first TSOM tour show in Milano, Italy. The Sisters' tour was followed by a lengthy UK tour with White Rose Movement in support of their final release on Disc Error, the double A side vinyl 10" "Sister Speed / Aporia". A rare German edition of the 10" features a bonus CD of remixes. Following a disastrous break-in at the band's house when all their recorded archive, demos and recording equipment was stolen, the band withdrew from live performance for 18 months, dedicating all efforts to writing and then 9 months in the Amsterdam's famous Studio 150 working with Zlaya (recording, producing, mixing and mastering) on their debut album. In parallel the band established a fruitful working relationship with the Turrell Brothers, (Tom & Jon), Nottingham, UK-based Independent brother filmmakers. ("Creating work since 1997. 800+ videos to date") 'WIld In Wildlife' was eventually self-released in early 2011 on the band's 'Speed Records' imprint, licensed to the Far East and supported by major tours and festival appearances in Europe in addition to tours further afield, including the Far East and Southern Africa. Jon Turrell, an established classical musician, played live piano at a number of high-profile shows on these tours. 2nd album "The Bleach Room" was produced in the UK by renowned electronica producer Robert Harder (Whitey, Kylie, The Slits, Byrne & Eno, Neneh Cherry). Supported by videos produced by Ben Robinson and self-released in January 2013 on Speed Records, the album was again toured extensively in Europe and licensed overseas. The band's final major release "Aversion" was an extensive collection of remixed tracks from "The Bleach Room" together with 5 covers and was digitally released for Christmas 2013. "Aversion" had a physical release in April 2014 on Japanese label 51 Records.
