The problem with universal organs is that they are often not suitable for either baroque or symphonic music. However, Daniel Kern's organ in the Frauenkirche in Dresden is an example of an extremely successful bridge between organ traditions. The benchmark for the choice of instrument for this recording of Symphony No. 9 "From the New World" Antonín Dvořák's version for four-manual organ, transcribed by Pascal Kaufmann, was the good drawing ability of the characteristic 8' and 4' fundamental voices. Thanks to the variety of pipe menzurras, both according to Gottfried and Andreas Silbermann and according to Cavaillé-Coll (France, 19th century), Kern's organ offered a sufficiently wide choice. The highly dynamic swell with French reed tracks and the Setzer system with modern standards allow the symphony to be enlivened by a total of more than 400 different registrations. This CD is rounded off by two more works: the Humoresque Op. 101/7 by Antonín Dvořák, transcribed for (two-hand) organ by Edwin Lemare, and "Der Heilige Franziskus von Paula auf den Wogen schreitend" S 175 by Franz Liszt, also in a four-hand transcription by Pascal Kaufmann - a work which again perfectly reflects the richness of the faces of the Kern organ in the Dresden Frauenkirche, built in 2005. Brothers Markus and Pascal Kaufmann, who hail from Lichtenstein, Saxony, studied together at the Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber and the Hochschule für Kirchenmusik in Dresden. Pascal Kaufmann was assistant to Frauenkirche organist Samuel Kummer and is currently the church musician in Augustusburg, Saxony, while Markus Kaufmann is organist at Quedlinburg Cathedral. The recording of this CD was supported by the Frauenkirche Foundation.
