After the success of "Death Walks Behind You", an appearance on Top Of The Pops and a successful tour, it was time for the new Atomic Rooster stars to record their third album. The album is a perfect example of the band's evolution. Less bombastic than its predecessors, "In Hearing Of" is almost funky. The lyrics are - as was common in British hard rock at the time - full of doom and gloom, and hints of classical music surface here and there. Against this Atomic Rooster juxtaposes Vincent Crane's tasty keyboards and melodies that catch the ears. If we were to define the genre of "In Hearing Of", we could say that it's not so much metal, nor quite progressive, but still moving and very well done. Although the album can't match the classic status of its immediate predecessor, "In Hearing Of" is a fun album for fans of progressive and hard rock, and perhaps the last Atomic Rooster album to have an impact on the heavy prog scene - soon the band will be surpassed by Uriah Heep, Hawkwind and Gentle Giant. The influence of "In Hearing Of" can be heard in these bands and continues in bands like Wolfmother.
