For five decades, David Bowie has been arguably the most versatile pop star, always surprising by constantly reinventing himself - this unique phenomenon in contemporary culture is celebrated in the large-scale exhibition "David Bowie Is", which began at London's Victoria & Albert Museum, is on display at Berlin's Martin-Gropius-Bau until August 24, and will then also be on view in Paris, Chicago and Groningen. Between 1969 and 1994, 21 of Bowie's studio albums were released, each containing several hit singles and iconic songs. But it's not just the well-known Bowie standards that will be heard on "Sound + Vision". A deep dive into the vast archive reveals real gems, such as long-forgotten B-sides, explosive live recordings, soundtracks and little-known remixes. We discover, for example, a rare B-side of Dylan's folk song "The Wild-Eyed Boy From Freecloud," a special recording of "1984 / Dodo" from 1973, an outtake from the '75 Young Americans album called "After Today," and the indispensable German version of "Helden / Heroes," perhaps his best-known hit from the album of the same name. Bowie's live performances are also legendary, showcasing him as a peerless entertainer. Already in 1973, the concert film "Ziggy Stardust: The Motion Picture" was made, the soundtrack of which was released in 1982 as a double album and is represented by three tracks on the album "Sound + Vision". The live albums "David Live" (1974) and "Stage" (1978) are among the best-selling live albums in pop music. One of the big events of the music scene is his excursion into the Brecht theatre with the album "Baal" (1982), from which some songs can be heard. He introduced himself as a folk-influenced singer-songwriter in 1969 with the album Space Oddity, then switched to hard rock in 1970 with "The Man Who Sold The World," which even twenty years later would seduce Nirvana into an iconic unplugged cover version, reached the pinnacle of glam rock with "Ziggy Stadust" (1972), became the archetype of white soul with "Young Americans" (1975), introduced electronica to pop music on a large scale with "Warszawa" (1977) and provided the blueprint for the neo-romantic scene with "Ashes To Ashes" (1980). He continued to fill stadiums around the world with songs like "Modern Love" (1983) and even became a legend in the '90s with "Jump They Say" (1993).
