The new album consists of two riveting 20-minute epics of wide-ranging, noise-soaked post-rock, while the two accompanying six-minute tracks on the 10" show the Canadian band at their most devastating, haunting and elegant. Constant chugging flourishes as some of the band's soaring, haunting melodies echo and converge amidst the counterpoint of violin and bass. Field recordings and agitated, semi-improvised passages frame these passionate epics. Moving atmospherics, raucous orchestration, drone, hypnotic swinging crescendos, relentlessly layered towers of distorted clean vocals: State's End embodies all the beloved aspects of the band. Twenty-five years on, this new album is as vital, engaging, timely and relentless as any in Godspeed You's rich discography! Black Emperor. Just as State's End brings together the full range of Godspeed's sonic trademarks, the album artwork spans the band's entire visual history: grainy, monochromatic photos from recent albums appear on the inner sleeves, while the gatefold cover draws on the iconic graphics of earlier classics like Slow Riot For New Zero Canada and Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven. State's End features William Schmiechen's illustrations of Taijitu flowers on the front cover and tear gas canisters on the back cover, printed in thermographic black ink on the double vinyl sleeve. The illuminated cross from Godspeed's debut album F#A#INFINITY reappears on the inside cover, a repeated homage to the electrified cross on a hill in the band's native Montreal. State's End was recorded and mixed in October 2020 in Montreal at Thee Mighty Hotel2Tango, the band's home base, by veteran and award-winning indie producer (and co-founder of The Besnard Lakes) Jace Lasek, who collaborates with Godspeed for the first time on this record.
