Henderson's illustrious recording career began in the early 1960s with Blue Note. In 1963, he launched his career as a leader with his debut on Blue Note with Page One, a remarkable quintet session with trumpeter Kenny Dorham, a collaborator who contributed two originals to the six-track album and also wrote the liner notes, claiming that the "tenor saxophonist with the goatee" was "one of the most musical young saxophonists since Charlie Parker." High praise, which Henderson lived up to on the album "Page One". The band also included a stellar rhythm section around bassist Butch Warren, drummer Pete LaRoc and pianist McCoy Tyner, who is listed on the album cover as "etc." because he just signed with Impulse!. This hard-bop album not only opened the jazz world's ears to Henderson's exuberant tenor saxophone voice, but also helped him make a name for himself on other Blue Note recordings, most notably the classic albums by Horace Silver (Song for My Father), Lee Morgan (The Sidewinder) and Andrew Hill (Point of Departure), all released in 1964. The first side opens with Dorham's double-block: the lilting, bossa-heavy "Blue Bossa," where the trumpeter and tenor play an infectious overture with harmonic beauty before Henderson delivers a smoky, spirited solo, and the balladic "La Mesha," played with soulful tenor grace. The rest of the album is made up of Henderson's impressive originals, including the driving blues of "Homestretch," featuring fiery solos from both frontmen, Tyner's rolling break and LaRoc's brisk drumming, and the swinging "Jinrikisha," which Henderson sings with his energetic tenor improvisations. The highlight of the collection is Henderson's bossa-inflected "Recorda Me," which is not only a contemporary jazz standard but also a piece he never tired of playing, as evidenced by the fact that it was in his repertoire throughout his tenure as bandleader. The first side closes with the slow blues "Out of the Night," which is superbly performed by the rhythm section and features arguably Henderson's strongest improvisational section. The first side features Henderson's "Call me Ishmael," which marks the beginning of this tenor saxophonist's success story in jazz.
