The legendary comeback here is marked by a reissue of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto in B minor with Sviatoslav Richter, followed no less spectacularly by a concert violin exhibition by Bartók specialist Andre Gertler. A true musical feast is celebrated by Ancerl's reading of Shostakovich's Leningrad Symphony. The high emotionality and tragic drama of Shostakovich's work can hardly be more believable anywhere than here, as performed by a conductor whose bitter wartime experience followed him for the rest of his life. While the originality of the compositional idioms of Janáček and Martinů is clearly evident after the first bars of their music, the artistic legacy of Ladislav Vycpalek ranks alongside the most profound expressions of the philosophical spirit in Czech music and is sure to pleasantly surprise the discerning music lover in particular.
