...an extraordinary masterpiece - Pete Townshend, 1969. This quote will always be associated with this album. At the time of the album's release, it was used in an advertisement. Despite the many false promises in the ad, it has stood the test of time. It's easy to forget how quickly things evolved in the first incarnation of King Crimson: They formed on 13 January 1969, by April they were already playing regularly at clubs like The Marquee and The Speakeasy and performing at the Lyceum with Tyrannosaurus Rex, in May they made the first of two recordings for the BBC, in June they held their first (aborted) album recording session, and in early July, in a major breakthrough, they played to 650,000 people in Hyde Park as support to the Rolling Stones.Recording the album in August, signing a deal with Island Records (and Atlantic in the US), missing the Isle of Wight festival due to illness/exhaustion, more gigs and a second BBC session in September, a unanimously praised Top 5 album in the UK, followed by a Top 30 debut in the US a few weeks later, then a US tour - performing at legendary venues like the Boston Tea Party, Kinetic Playground in Chicago, the Fillmore East in New York, and more shows with the Rolling Stones - this time at the Miami festival and, after a series of December shows at the Fillmore West in San Francisco, ended as quickly as it began - the arc from formation to the band's breakup lasted little more than 11 months. What remains is an iconic - both musically and in terms of cover art - self-produced debut album, a fearsome touring reputation, and the sense that the band had set its own agenda in its short existence.King Crimson have returned in many different line-ups over the years - each different from its predecessors, and with two shows at the Palladium in late 2018 and three shows at the Royal Albert Hall in June 2019, the current line-up has played to more people in London, the city where the band started, than at any time since 1969, and played more material from 1969 than any line-up since the original. The current line-up has more than once been described as "the best touring band in the world" - something that was also said of the original group. The studio recordings of the first King Crimson are still masterpieces fifty years on. Recorded in ten days and released on 10 October 1969, In the Court of the Crimson King is one of the albums that defined British rock music, and one of the best debut albums of all time. Pete Townshend has described the album, which has earned legendary status over the years, as "a wondrous masterpiece". It is the only studio document of an extraordinary year in the life of King Crimson. It began with the band's first rehearsal on 13 January, gigs at the Marquee Club in Hyde Park with the Rolling Stones, the recording and release of their first album, and the break-up of the line-up after their first US tour. This release was created directly from recently rediscovered original tapes by renowned engineer Simon Heyworth. The artwork was approved by King Crimson founder Robert Fripp.
