'Sometimes I Might Be Introvert' is Simza's first album since 2019's critically acclaimed and Mercury Prize-nominated 'GREY Area', and her new work feels almost defiantly rich and expansive, a true modern classic that effortlessly fuses disparate styles into a stunning whole, bridging the gap between restless modern storytelling and hip hop. The album shows the huge evolutionary leap the artist has made since "GREY Area", and is clearly not destined to conquer the pop charts. Rather, it expresses the feelings of anger and power, upset and fear that black women experience in today's society, and it's not just a philosophical reflection. The result is some of the most ambitious and compelling songs we've heard from Little Simz to date; an album that pushes the boundaries of the rap genre. With "Sometimes I Might Be Introvert", you won't encounter a subtle introduction. Introvert, a lecture on living at cross purposes with society, full of angst, exhaustion and frustration, but also a political awakening, will throw you in at the deep end. It's a swift, uncompromising, deadly response, riveting and compelling. It's accompanied by a fantastic video by Solomon Lightelm of PRETTYBIRD - part majestic, part terrifying, with a fragmented, collage-like structure that perfectly reflects the setting: a beautiful and dangerous place of violence and stubborn resistance. The middle, as Simz declares again and again, won't last ("man, it's like they can't sleep until our spirit is crushed") - and the author leaves out no unpleasant detail. The rest of the album's tracks build on each other seamlessly. Sometimes I Might Be Introvert was produced by Simz and her musical partner Inflo. Guests include up-and-coming artists such as Cleo Sol, Obongjayar and even actress Emma Corrin, known from The Crown. The smooth, brisk narrative makes the frenetic, shimmering world we live in palpable with uncompromising energy and dynamism. Like garish Polaroid photographs, songs unfold before our eyes and a photographer is everywhere, documenting a new world where tender moments stand alongside horrific violence, femininity is celebrated and we are treated to some very thoughtful moments. Among the many voices of the contemporary music industry, Simz is one of the most impressive. He writes with an intensity and urgency that few can match. On the other hand, Sometimes I Can Be an Introvert is not a collection of tirades either. Instead, it is a lively hybrid, a radically honest work that uses personal stories, large and small, private and social, to put paradoxical situations under scrutiny and condemn them. Like other legendary musicians before her, Simz looks at the chaos and disorder in the world with a thoughtful and engaged eye, seeing the amazing possibilities and the enormous responsibility it holds. Many last saw Simz in one of the lead roles in the cult British series Top Boy on Netflix. The drama about drug dealing is executive produced by Drake and Simz plays the role of single mother Shelley. The next season is currently filming.
