Manchester Orchestra approached the Masks project with the intention of creating a tightly knit "film album" that could be listened to in sequence and in one sitting, with the individual tracks together telling a bold, long-form story. Originally based on a fictional character, Masks began to process emotions in real time as McDowell's father entered the most difficult phase of his battle with cancer and ultimately lost his fight in 2019. "It was very abstract at first, but when Robert's father's battle with cancer began, I started to create parallels in my head to what I was actually writing about," Hull explains. "It became an exploration of my faith." A Million Masks of God is a testament to the bond that allows the duo to transform something so tragically personal into boundless, compassionate and communal art. "When we suffer loss and the inevitable grief that follows, we have a choice. Do we let it wash over us? Do we try to ignore it and pretend it's not there? Or do we search and search until we find signs of beauty in life and all its experiences? ", Hull explains. "In some ways, pain will always define you, but being together and creating something meaningful out of all the difficulties has been the most beneficial tool I've found."
