Who would have thought that Manu Chao would be able to improve on his excellent debut in 1998? I didn't - and it turns out I was wrong when three tracks of Proxima Estacion: Esperanza ("Next Station: Hope") weren't even in my player! At 40 years old, the son of Spanish immigrants seems younger, fresher and more playful than some people half his age. The album is simply entertaining from the first to the last second. Reggae, South American folk and a dash of rai are the spice, with dance music at the heart of the good mood. The master often quotes with a wink, but only to create something new out of old elements. The linguistic diversity of the cosmopolitans extends into six languages. In addition to French, Spanish and English, there are now texts in Portuguese, Arabic and Portunol, a Spanish-Portuguese hybrid spoken in the respective border areas. The former Mano Negra member is equally at home in the border areas, where he feels most at home. But what am I writing?
