George Avakian, who led a series on ethnic music in Colombia under the guidance of ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax, wanted Gil Evans to work mainly with flamenco because he respected Spanish composers. Miles himself discovered Joaquin Rodrigo's "Concierto de Aranjuez" and flamenco at the same time - thanks to an anthology brought back from Spain by actress Beverly Bentley and a concert Frances Taylor took him to. The result was majestic music in which Gil Evans bypassed the kitschiness of Rodrigo's original score and held his own with the help of Miles' formidable trumpet. In addition to the Adagio from Concierto, Gil Evans borrowed Manuel de Falla's "Will O' The Wisp" and adapted "The Pan Piper" from an aria for pan flute that Lomax had recorded in Galicia, and "Saeta" from a ritual chant of the same name that was sung to the accompaniment of the brass bands accompanying the processions in Seville during Holy Week. In this last piece and in "Solea," Miles draws on the glow of flamenco singing while departing from all traces of folklore. Miles Davis collaborated with arranger Gil Evans three times during his career. After Miles Ahead and Porgy and Bess, they created Sketches of Spain, which was a career highlight for both. The album combines Spanish themes, lush orchestrations, romantic colors, and Davis' increasingly lyrical playing, and continues to impress five decades after its initial release. Along with Kind of Blue, In a Silent Way and Round About Midnight, Sketches of Spain is one of Miles Davis' most innovative and enduring albums.
The 180g vinyl LP has been remastered from the original master tapes by Krieg Wunderlich and Shawn R. Britton and comes with detailed sleeve notes and serial number in a limited edition.
