Soft Machine's tendency to create extensive suites of common songs, both in concert and in the studio (already Ayers' suite on the first album), reached its peak on 1970's Third, which was unusual for its time in that each of its four sides contained a suite. Third was also unusual because it sold for over a decade in the US and is Soft Machine's best-selling record. They received unprecedented acclaim throughout Europe and made history by becoming the first rock band to be invited to perform at the London Proms in August 1970.
