The Grateful Dead In 1974, From the Mars Hotel was released. The album was recorded in the band's own studio, which they named "The Mars Hotel" after the hotel in the song "U.S. Blues". The album was the first the band released after the death of keyboardist and vocalist Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, and the first to feature keyboardist Keith Godchaux and his wife, singer Donna Godchaux. The album includes the song "Scarlet Begonias", which has become a live favorite of the band.
