The album went platinum in the United States and Canada. In November 2019, the album's lead single, the track "Heartless", was released. The song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, becoming The Weeknd' fourth number one single on the chart. The second single, "Blinding Lights", was released in January 2020. The song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and became The Weeknd 's fifth single on the chart. The Weeknd described the album as "more upbeat" and "fun" than his previous albums. He cited Michael Jackson, Prince and The Beatles as influences on the album.
