The 1970s still shape Tom Waits' image today. Although the singer, songwriter, actor and writer, born in 1949 in Pomona, California, has lived for decades in relatively well-to-do, middle-class circumstances, he still has a romantic reputation as a drifter, eccentric and alcohol-lover who, like a mixture of Charles Baudelaire and a young Charles Bukowski, gives his gruff voice to people in the gutter of affluent society. The starting point was Waits' debut, "Closing Time," released in March 1973. The record had been recorded the year before in just ten days with a studio band led by producer Jerry Yester. Although Waits' blend of jazz, folk, blues, R'n'B, vaudeville and theatre music didn't quite fit the style of the time, the album was well received everywhere. In 1974, the Eagles recorded the song "Ol' 55", and later Lee Hazlewood and Tim Buckley dedicated the heartbreaking "Martha". The album "Closing Time" also features the acoustic number "I Hope I Don't Fall In Love With You".
