Following the success of the first two volumes of the I'm A Freak Baby series, Grapefruit returns with the third volume of the pioneering hard rock sound from the nascent British underground.Like the previous volumes, I'm A Freak Baby 3 features many of the tracks that were synonymous with the stoner and free elements of the English counterculture, from such essential underground greats as Mick Farren and The Deviants, Edgar Broughton Band, Pink Fairies and Hawkwind. Also represented are musicians and bands who honed their sound before they achieved great success: the embryonic Deep Purple, the youthful Free, the first Thin Lizzy album, Lemmy (fronted by Sam Gopal) and the pre-eminent Mott The Hoople are rounded out by old friends The Yardbirds, who are represented by a sensational live version of the 1968 song "Dazed And Confused", which Jimmy Page carried into his next band. The other bands featured here, such as May Blitz, Fuzzy Duck, Leaf Hound, Zior, N.S.U. and Ashkan, have left albums that sell for big bucks today. Many of the bands featured here, however, didn't even get far enough to pique the interest of record companies. Outsider bands like Wicked Lady, Grit, Stoned Rose (with Chris Cross from before Ultravox) and Bone could only preserve their sound in rehearsal rooms or, if they could get enough money, in the cheapest demo studios.The album I'm A Freak Baby 3, complete with a few one-offs (Mighty Hard, Distant Jim) and previously unreleased tracks, is another essential insight into the nascent movement that would later spark a musical revolution, packaged in a box set and with a lavish 40-page booklet. To quote Edgar Broughton's mighty band: Let the freaks keep on spinning!
